2010 Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of the Year (Second Place)
Katie Dahl is a honey-throated alto thrush and an eagle-eyed songwriter who soars high on her debut album.
Claudia Russell, singer-songwriter
Katie Dahl has a keen eye for the life of the heart and the life of the world. She also has a sharp pen, a strong voice, and the intelligence, compassion and musical sensibility to write and perform songs that are a pure joy to hear. Katie makes me see, feel and think about things that are real, and gives me good laughs, heart-tugs and inspiration along the way. County Line is a superb debut album. May it be the first of many from a singer-songwriter you need to get to know.
Parker J. Palmer (author of A Hidden Wholeness, Let Your Life Speak, and The Courage to Teach)
Katie Dahl is a writer of such depth and laser-sharp perception, you almost expect her to have a thousand shows and a million miles behind her. But then she shows up with a stage demeanor that is so innocent and utterly without guile, you wonder at her maturity.
Karen Mal
In a rich alto voice, Dahl brilliantly paints to life vivid scenes of cherry orchards, wide-open deserts and early-morning cities, as well as characters of depth, introspection and purpose. The title track of "County Line" is an infectious story about leaving home and the ache to return. Later in the album, this theme is beautifully mirrored by John Prine's "Paradise." With a nod to Pete Seeger, "Freedom Song" evokes the most classic melodies of Americana. Dahl's skill for combining both outstanding lyrics with sweet melodies is a rare one. These qualities are amplified by the caliber and sensitivities of the musicians who accompany her. Since I opened Robin Jay Music four years ago, I have never heard as many people harmonizing and humming along with any other recording as much as this one.
